SHAKESPEARE IN NATURE – GREEN SPACE

SHAKESPEARE IN NATURE – GREEN SPACE

After what we’ve all been through, let’s take a week to be outside, feet on grass, voices reverberating in the open air.

In the 16th Century, we were still in harmonious communication with the dirt below our feet and the spheres and lights above. In Western culture, this has become lost, but our minds and bodies still maintain a desire to be in harmony with nature. Let us take a week to unplug and find our connection to nature under trees and sky.

EXPLORATIONS

The Power of Plants in Shakespeare’s Plays – The medical use/mis-use of plants – from the diabolical flower-potions of Cymbeline’s Queen to the Nurse’s weaning baby Juliet with wormwood, to Imogen’s powerful coma drug, to  Falstaff’s belief in the power of potatoes, to hebenon put in a King’s ear by his own brother.

Climate Change – We aren’t the first to have the conversation. We’re on a volatile ball in space made from fire. Deforestation, endangered species, and climate change were also concerns in Shakespeare’s time.

Nature and Us Together – Shakespeare alludes to at least 63 different kinds of birds in his plays and poems. How many birds will we identify in our urban park this week? The pleasures and dangers of humans and green spaces – what happens when we mess with nature and its creatures?
