If you saw last year’s Taming of the Cur, you saw how we successfully turned Shakespeare upside down and inside out by swapping genders and making the Shrew a boy.  This year, we are developing an original piece – what happens when several of Shakespeare’s most famous characters (and some not so famous ones) find themselves thrown together in London’s notorious prison – The Clink!! – and fireworks ensue …

Two Gentlemen of Verona

Two Gentlemen of Verona

two-gents-thumbOne of Shakespeare’s “romantic” (yet not so romantic) comedies, this play uncovers the possible disasters when one has to choose between loyalty to a friend and one’s own desires and agenda – when the two are at cross-purposes. “Two Gents” is rife with iconic, large and colorful characters, including one of Shakespeare’s first cross-dressing heroines, and a couple of scene-stealing clowns, and, as has become the LADC tradition, lots of music!

Performances:
Saturday & Sunday
May 3rd & 4th / May 10th & 11th
12:30 pm

The Lyric Theatre
520 N. La Brea Ave.

July 14 through August 1, 2013

LADC is pleased to offer two programs this year – our 6th Annual Summer Shakespeare Intensive, and Queen Elinor’s School of Knighthood and Chivalry. Our programs are designed for students entering Grade 2 – Grade 9 in Fall 2014. For some activities, the participants are divided according to age, and for others, they will work together as a group. In some group activities, the older participants will serve as mentors to the younger; the younger students learn by example, and the older gain valuable leadership experience.

Summer with LADC is held at The Lyric Theatre at 520 N. La Brea Ave. Each week will offer unique content, and those who choose to do multiple weeks will have the opportunity to build on their experiences of the prior weeks.

OUR SESSIONS ARE FULL – if you would like to be placed on the waiting list, please fill out the form below …

We love our supporters – know that we are honored every time you attend an event, or sign your child up for a class, or tell a friend about us. We cherish every donation that comes into us, and are so grateful you chose us, when there are thousands of options – the world needs help. We believe that art saves lives and that arts communities change the world, one neighborhood at a time. We are both of those things. And we are growing because there is a demand for us in so many underserved pockets of our city. If every person on our mailing list, every fan on Facebook, and every follower on Twitter donated just $12.00 by 12/12, then our youth arts program would have over $12,000! sitc-library

The Taming of the Shrew

The Taming of the Shrew

shrew-flyer

Subversive…(Adjective)
Seeking or intended to subvert an established system or institution.
Purists, head for the hills. We have subverted – with impunity – the established opinions and “schools of thought” on this already controversial play, turning conventional concepts on their 16th century heads. What happens when Petruchia, a single-minded young woman, determined to marry well, meets Jake, otherwise known as the Shrew … er, that is, the Cur? His younger brother Bianco has all the girls in a tizzy, but thanks to the boys’ stubborn mother, they can’t do anything about it until Jake is married off.

Midsummer Night’s Dream

Midsummer Night’s Dream

midsummer-thumb

A mysterious forest, ruled over by a Fairy King and Queen. A bunch of “civilians” rehearsing a play. And four young runaways who get caught up in it all. Imagine this commonly performed play, performed in an uncommon way: early “silent film era”  style … in the days when the expression on an actor’s face told everything and more!

Saturday & Sunday
April 12th & 13th

Shakespeare in the City

photo19We have developed an on-going Performing Arts Troupe in the West Adams/Mid-City area. Through free and low-cost classes and workshops, we are identifying and nurturing young motivated performers and providing them with the space to experience the camaraderie of an arts community, the skills to meet the challenges of the creative process, and the opportunity to develop a new sense of assurance, autonomy and self-motivation.

These opportunities are geared to children and youth, ages 7 – 16, and involve them in all aspects of acting, theater and Shakespeare, culminating in periodic performances for the community.

Shakespeare in the City builds and betters the Mid City Community by pulling youth into a creative womb where they are nurtured and encouraged to do great things.

In 2014, we premiered The Tempest. Check out the Photo Gallery (and video coming soon!!)
